 Professor Gregor BENTON

    Resume: Gregor BENTON (Oriental Studies, Cambridge, 1968) is Professor Emeritus at Cardiff University. Earlier he worked in Anthropology at Amsterdam University (1979-89) and was Professor of Chinese Studies at Leeds (1989-99). He has also worked at the University of Malaya and taught China courses at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. He has published more than a score of books on Marxism, Chinese Communist history, China’s Red guerrillas, the Sino-Japanese War, dissent in China, Chinese Trotskyism, Hong Kong, moral economy theory, and, most recently, several volumes on ethnic and migrant Chinese communities outside China. He has published books at Oxford UP, Princeton UP, Columbia UP, Hawai’i UP, California UP, and Amsterdam UP. His Mountain Fires (Berkeley 1992) received the James Cole award, the Philip E. Lilienthal imprint (which University of California Press awards to ‘honor special books in Asian studies’), and the Association of Asian Studies’ award for the Best Book on Modern China. His New Fourth Army (Berkeley 1999) received the James Cole award. His edited translation of F: Hu Feng’s Prison Years (Verso 2013) won the English Pen Award. His current interests include identity transformations in young people born to Chinese emigrants, and how they manage their bi-cultural or pluri-cultural identities in their relations with mainstream society and the mainstream economy. Regarding Chinese outside China, Benton has published books on ethnic and migrant Chinese communities in Europe (Macmillan), Britain (Palgrave), the Netherlands (Coutinho), and Cuba (Rowham and Littlefield), and two on ethnic and migrant Chinese communities in international perspective (Routledge). He has also published articles on ethnic and migrant Chinese in many leading journals. He works in several languages including Chinese, Dutch, French, Spanish, Italian, German, and Welsh.
