Professor Karl Gerth is an internationally recognized authority on Chinese consumerism. His latest book, As China Goes, So Goes the World: How Chinese Consumers are Transforming Everything, has been described as “essential reading for anyone trying to make sense of China today.” The book, which has been translated into Chinese, Arabic, and Russian, reveals the interconnected and wide-ranging ramifications of China’s shift toward a market economy over the past thirty years.
Prof Gerth holds a PhD from Harvard, taught at Oxford, and is currently professor and Hsiu Endowed Chair in Chinese Studies at the University of California, San Diego. He has received numerous research awards, including from the US Fulbright Foundation, the British Academy, and the Japanese Ministry of Education. He is also the China co-team leader of the Ceres21 Project, sponsored by the Norwegian Research Council, which is investigating innovative adaptations in the automotive and power industries to climate and environmental change on three continents.
