In 2006, Dr. Gan was invited to set up the Research Institute of Economics and Management (RIEM) at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics (SWUFE). It specializes absorbing overseas PhDs in economics, finance, and management. Currently, there are more than 50 full-time professors and associate professors who received their PhDs in economics and finance from overseas schools such as Harvard University and the University of California, Berkeley.
In 2009, Dr. Gan initiated and led the nationwide academic investigation, the China Household Finance Survey (CHFS), to establish a database of micro-data on Chinese household finance. Currently, Nationally and provincially representative, the most recent round of the survey covered more than 28,000 households and contains information about assets and liabilities, income and expenses, insurance and security, and other detailed aspects of micro-data. The survey comprehensively tracks households’ financial behavior to fill the blanks of micro-data on Chinese household finances.
